The State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China issued two voluntary national standards on August 28: GB/T 48072-2026, "Sodium ion cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems - Safety technical specification," and GB/T 48098-2026, "Sodium ion cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems - Technical specification." Both take effect on March 1, 2027, are administered by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and are currently in the pre-implementation stage.
The safety specification sets out safety requirements and corresponding test methods for sodium-ion cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems. Its scope covers applications including telecom, central emergency lighting and alarm systems, UPS and emergency power supply, fixed engine starting, photovoltaic systems, residential energy storage, and large-capacity storage. Together, the two standards provide the basis for product development, testing and evaluation, and engineering application of energy-storage sodium-ion batteries at the safety and technical-specification levels.
The standards were led by the China Electronic Standardization Institute, with participation from across the supply chain including CATL, Liyang HiNa Battery, Hithium, EVE Energy, Sunwoda, Huawei Digital Power, Tianneng Battery, Guangdong Highstar Naxing, Shanghai Hanxing Technology, Jona Energy (Jiangsu Zhongna), Huayang Group's industrial technology research institute, and the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. In the power-storage field, GB/T 44265-2024, "Electrical energy storage power station - Technical specifications for sodium ion battery," was issued in August 2024 and took effect in March 2025. Once the two new standards take effect, energy-storage sodium-ion batteries will have more complete standards coverage at the safety and technical-requirement levels.
