On August 27, Hopewind Electric (603063.SH) released an official announcement: the Baochi Energy Storage Station in Wenshan, Yunnan - a national new-type energy storage pilot demonstration project - has been successfully connected to the grid and has operated stably for more than one year. As China's first large-scale lithium-sodium hybrid storage station, the '40 MWh high/low rate composite grid-forming sodium-ion battery energy storage system supporting weak grids' adopted by the project has passed the new product technical appraisal organized by the China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF), with product performance indicators reaching internationally leading levels. The grid-forming sodium-ion storage system was led by China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Research Institute, with all efficient high-overload grid-forming energy storage PCS units supplied by Hopewind Electric.
On the project: the Baochi Energy Storage Station is located in Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, with a total installed capacity of 400 MWh, annual adjustable electricity of 580 million kWh, serving more than 30 wind and photovoltaic stations in Yunnan. The 40 MWh high/low rate composite grid-forming sodium-ion storage system deployed in Zone E achieved major breakthroughs in three key technologies - large-capacity power-type sodium-ion batteries, efficient high-overload grid-forming PCS, and high/low rate composite system integration - and first realized multi-scenario applications integrating peak shaving, frequency regulation and grid-forming stability support.
Based on its string PCS standard platform, Hopewind carried out deep customization and on-site joint commissioning, becoming the first manufacturer to complete full grid-connected/off-grid condition testing on site and the first to achieve multi-machine coordinated black start; on-site measurements showed its PCS fully meets stringent test requirements including 3x/10s overload, primary frequency regulation, inertia response, damping characteristics, phase angle mutation adaptability and weak-grid fault ride-through, and breakthroughly achieved 28 PCS units directly paralleled under one transformer winding.
The Baochi station has been grid-connected and operating for over a year (commissioned in 2025); this event is a technical appraisal milestone for the sodium system, not a new grid-connection event; 'internationally leading' is the appraisal conclusion, and specific appraisal report details are not public; this official release was issued by PCS manufacturer Hopewind, the sodium storage system overall was led by CSG Energy Storage, and the 40 MWh sodium system accounts for 10% of the 400 MWh total capacity.
