On August 17, CATL's 1,000MW/4,000MWh (1GW/4GWh) sodium-ion independent shared energy storage station project filing was completed by the Development and Reform Bureau of Mojiang Hani Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, with filing code 2608-530822-04-05-827458 (26=2026, 08=Yunnan Province, 530822=Mojiang Hani Autonomous County administrative division code). The project was already included on July 2, 2026 in the “2026 Yunnan Province New-Type Shared Energy Storage Project List” issued by the Yunnan Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the Provincial Energy Administration: the list contains 13 projects totalling 1.9GW/7.6GWh, of which only 2 are sodium-ion projects (400MW/1.6GWh in total, both located in Pu'er City); the Mojiang phase-one 200MW/800MWh is one of them. The completion of the filing means the project has formally moved from the provincial list into substantive preliminary development.
The phase-one scale is 200MW/800MWh, with a total planned scale of 1GW/4GWh under the filing (to be built in phases). Under Yunnan's requirements, projects on the list must complete filing within 2 months of the notice, achieve substantive construction start within 1 year, and sodium-ion projects must be connected to the grid within 1 year of construction start. On the technology front, the project will be equipped with CATL's TENER Sodium energy storage system — globally launched in June 2026, which, according to CATL, features a cycle life of up to 15,000 cycles, over 92% capacity retention at -20°C, and a platform design sharing the same enclosure as its 587Ah LFP energy storage cells (these parameters are company-disclosed). CATL plans to begin domestic deliveries of TENER Sodium systems in September 2026 and achieve 1GWh shipments by end of 2026.
Filing does not equal construction start, let alone commissioning; the project still faces a long process of environmental assessment, land use and grid connection procedures before substantive construction. The “1GW/4GWh” is the planned total scale under the filing, with phase one of 200MW/800MWh on the provincial list; parameters such as cycle life and low-temperature capacity retention are company-disclosed.
