According to official news released by China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), CEEC North China Institute won the survey and design bid for the 200MW/800MWh independent energy storage project in Zhangjiakou Economic Development Zone. Located east of Zhongxing South Road in the Zhangjiakou economic development zone, the project plans a 200MW/800MWh independent storage station. The project adopts a dual-technology layout combining LFP and sodium-ion batteries: 180MW/720MWh of LFP storage serves as the main peaking unit to ensure stable operation, while 20MW/80MWh of sodium-ion storage will carry out demonstration application of new-type storage technology. CEEC stated that once completed, the project will serve as a regulation and support facility for the regional power system, helping to smooth renewable output fluctuation and reduce curtailment of wind and solar power.
From a technology-route perspective, this is a common "LFP as mainstay, sodium-ion as demonstration" mix in hybrid storage station design. LFP storage takes on the main peaking role, while sodium-ion storage serves as a demonstration and validation window for new technology, with both sharing the substation and auxiliary facilities. Since 2026 multiple independent storage projects have incorporated sodium-ion batteries into hybrid configurations, reflecting an industry approach of accumulating operational data through small-scale demonstration while sodium-ion costs have not yet matched lithium. It should be noted that this bid covers survey and design services only; subsequent equipment procurement, engineering construction and grid connection still need to be determined through follow-up tenders, and the project remains in the early design stage.
However, winning a survey and design bid does not mean construction has started, nor does it mean equipment procurement or delivery; whether the 20MW/80MWh sodium-ion portion is ultimately implemented and which cell supplier is chosen will be decided by subsequent tenders.
