According to SMM flash news on August 6 and Sina Finance reports on August 7, Wuhan Qina New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. Plans to invest about 800 million yuan to build a 50,000-tonne-per-year high-performance sodium-ion cathode material project in Lichuan County, Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province, with construction expected to start in August 2026 and a build period of about 10 months. The project adopts the polyanionic (composite sodium iron phosphate, NFPP) technology route and plans to jointly establish a "Sodium-Ion Industry Technology Research Institute" with the local government of Lichuan and Hubei University of Technology, including pilot platforms for materials, cells and battery systems. Reports describe this as Qina's largest single expansion investment disclosed to date.
Wuhan Qina was established in September 2022, headquartered in Wuhan, with technology from a Hubei University of Technology team contributing as equity. Its capacity build-out has progressed in steps: a thousand-tonne NFPP cathode line in Huanggang went into production in 2023; a 2,000-tonne R&D pilot base was filed in Wuhan in 2024; a 10,000-tonne line was filed by its Huanggang subsidiary around May 2026 (planned construction start in November); and this 50,000-tonne Lichuan project is its largest capacity plan. Sodium-ion cathode materials are transitioning from thousand-tonne and ten-thousand-tonne scales to larger volumes, and insufficient cathode supply is regarded as one of the bottlenecks constraining downstream cell scale-up.
However, the investment amount, capacity and construction timeline are all based on media reports and corporate disclosures; the project filing, environmental assessment and actual construction progress still need to be confirmed by government approval platform announcements.
