What is the difference between the current collector of Sodium-ion Battery and Lithium-ion Battery?
There is a subversive difference in the current collector selection between Sodium-ion Battery and Lithium-ion Battery, which is also one of the core sources of the cost advantage of sodium batteries. The current collector of Lithium-ion Battery has strict distinction: the cathode uses light and corrosion-resistant aluminum foil, and the anode must use expensive copper foil, because aluminum foil will corrode in the lithium electrolyte system and cannot be used for the anode. While the electrolyte system of Sodium-ion Battery has stable chemical properties, both cathode and anode can use low-cost aluminum foil as the current collector, without using copper foil. Copper is a high-priced and scarce metal, while aluminum is a bulk and low-cost metal. This structural difference greatly reduces the consumption of precious metal consumables, simplifies the production process, and directly reduces the overall production cost of the battery, making the price advantage of sodium batteries fully highlighted.
