What are the functions of binders in sodium-ion batteries?
Binders have four core functions to guarantee electrode integrity and electrochemical stability. First, bonding and fixation: they aggregate active and conductive powders tightly onto aluminum foil, preventing powder shedding and delamination during coating, slitting, winding and long cycling to avoid micro-short circuits from detached particles. Second, deformation buffering: elastic binders absorb stress from slight volume expansion of hard carbon and Prussian blue during cycling to stop coating cracking and peeling. Third, chemical isolation: they resist corrosion and swelling from sodium electrolytes, separating powders from partial electrolyte contact and cutting interfacial side reactions. Fourth, slurry optimization: they improve powder dispersion, prevent precipitation and agglomeration, ensure uniform coating thickness and boost batch electrode consistency. Water-based binders cut waste gas treatment costs, fit green factories and dominate mass production of energy storage cells.
